Keynote: Mark Bittman
Mark Bittman | 60 min | English spokenVoorstelling: Sunday 24 March 20:30 | Rabozaal (SK/3)
We traditionally close the Food Film Festival with the wise, inspiring and above all motivating words of an internationally recognised speaker. Last year that was British professor Tim Lang. This year it is none other than New York Times columnist and cookbook author Mark Bittman.
Bittman’s mission in life is encapsulated in his mantra 'more plants, less meat'. His recipes guide home cooks towards a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle and his opinion pieces are both critical and realistic. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but in small steps. Farmers’ markets won’t save the world because the majority of people buy their groceries in supermarkets. In other words: good food has to be available in supermarkets.
Besides opinion pieces, Bittman has also written a number of best-selling books on cooking. The Fat Vegetarian is probably his best known – and the most extensive vegetarian book ever written. His most recent work is the critical Food Matters: A Guide to Conscious Eating, in which he makes the link between excessive meat consumption, obesity, global warming and other modern ills.
In his keynote speech, Bittman will argue passionately about the dangers of Western consumption patterns. Our consumption of meat and addiction to fast food have a huge negative impact on our health and serious consequences for a well-functioning planet. Even more interesting is what Bittman sees as the solution. How can the system be changed? Can we rely on industry to bring about change, is it up to consumers or do governments have a crucial role to play?
